Lead Climbing - OUTDOOR (LEVEL 2)

You don't need to have outdoor experience but you need basic experience in climbing and good experience in belay with a GriGri or equivalent (at a minimum) and be self sufficient with a 8 figure knot.

PROGRAM

We will be climbing from morning to afternoon. The location of the meeting point will be shared to the participants before the event starts.

In this event, we will learn:

• How to lead-climb safely
• Hot to place lead gear (such as quick draws and slings)
• How to belay a lead
• Falling techniques and belay a falling lead
• How to recover the rope and set a new route
• Equipment maintenance
• How to fold the rope
• How to chose the right equipment

We will climb only sport routes (which means no trad. Only with single pitch bolted routes).

At completion of this event you shall be admitted to the Graduates Group of the UAE Rock Climbing Meetup. A forum/chat with lots of other climbers that passed at least the lead climbing module successfully, ensuring therefore only people with proper training are on it. Within this group you can find buddies to go climbing with, discuss ideas, concerns or just socialize with other like minded people.

PRE-REQUISITES

Before the start, the organizer will check your ability in using (1) a GriGri (or equivalent) and (2) a figure 8 knot and reserves the right to not admit you to the event, should you not show confidence in these two basic requirements.

INCLUDED IN THE FEE 

Certified Rock Climbing Instructor for the whole day and necesary gear for the activity.

TRANSPORTATION 

You need to reach the start location with your own car.

If you don't have a car, there will always be people joining from Dubai or Abu Dhabi and they can car pool you.

WHAT TO BRING

You will need to bring lunch, snacks, water, drinks, etc for the day. You should also dress appropriately for being outdoors whether you prefer long sleeve, short sleeve shirts, shorts/pants, is your own preference but definitely have a jacket and maybe wool hat and gloves in case it gets cold or rains. We still will climb if cold and even if rain is not too much. Also bring appropriate sun protection, i.e. sunscreen, lip balm, sun hat, sunglasses.

You should have sturdy shoes for walking in the wadi to the crag but you may want sandals or flip flops while hanging around at the crag in between climbs. I also recommend to bring a camping chair so you can sit and relax when not climbing or belaying.

If you have climbing shoes, harness, helmet please bring them. If you don't have climbing shoes then plan to wear solid sneakers or hiking shoes. weak/flimsy shoes will be no good and neither will big, bulky hiking boots. If you don't have a harness or helmet I will have extras on hand. All other gear and equipment will be provided.
